Telecomm giant AT&T stated early January that it has signed an agreement with the Chicago-based Rush University Medical Centre for the IT equipment relocation and installation of 5G technology in the medical facility.
Installation of the technology, with AT&T to handle the IT equipment relocation and installation process, started in the very same month, and the technology will be activated in phases, which will be spread out throughout 2019. Upon completion of the project, Rush will become the first hospital in the United States to sport cutting-edge communications technology.
AT&T Chief Marketing Officer Mo Katibeh spoke on the agreement, saying that the company believes that 5G’s fast speeds and low-latency will transform all businesses, and, in healthcare, Rush will be leading the way. She pictures hospitals where rooms are intelligently scheduled, patient care is enhanced with artificial intelligence, and augmented reality is used to train medical students. It sounds like something straight out of the future, but they believe that it isn’t far off.
Chief Information Officer ShafiqRab, saying that 5G technology, with its high-speed and low latency, will do much to ensure that care is delivered to the people that need it, when they need it, to pretty much everywhere, even across large distances, on top of helping to keep costs down and improve efficiency. He gave an example of how this could work, detailing a scenario where a doctor could perform a virtual visit to a patient, all while getting the results of an MRI session in a few seconds.

Together AT&T (NYSE: T) and the Rush Medical Center staff stated that they expect to use the new 5G tech in order to get some field testing on what mobile technology can do for technology-driven therapies, all while improving the hospital’s operational processes, as well as making it easier and better for the patients.
